Gray's School of Art

Info

Degree shows are a highlight of the art and design calendar. When lockdown cancelled in-person shows at Gray’s School of Art, we partnered with RGU, Gray’s and Look Again to ensure they continued — reimagined for the web.

Our aim was to replicate the experience of a physical show online while pushing the limits of modern web technology to make it accessible and personal. Each graduate was given the tools to customise their own 3D space, supported by a simpler 2D version for broader access and deeper content.

The online shows drew 8,000–10,000 visitors from 85+ countries — far surpassing the usual 2,000 — and created new global opportunities for graduates.

For the identity, we focused on community and collaboration. Inspired by woven textures and shared paths, we used the experimental typeface Black Mamba to reflect the diversity of courses and the unpredictability of art school. Overlapping forms from the typeface were reimagined as fluid 3D shapes within the virtual space — a visual metaphor for the Gray’s community. A black-and-white palette ensured the spotlight stayed on student work.
